Picking Wedding Dress PatternsMost people buy their wedding gowns off the rack, and have them altered. However, this often results in ill-fitting gowns that don't flatter the figure the way they should. That's because most women aren't shaped the way that the model for the original gown was, and even alterations can't fix everything. If you want to avoid this problem, or are looking for a great dress on a modest budget, consider looking for wedding dress patterns instead of a ready-made dress. Unusual and interesting styles, very large or small sizes, and a perfect fit are all accommodated if you use a wedding dress pattern. If you know how to sew, you can follow the pattern to make your own gown. Be warned, however, that most wedding dress patterns require some high level sewing expertise. Just being able to sew together an easy skirt or blouse isn't enough. You also have to know how to handle delicate fabrics and fit a bodice closely, as well as dealing with figure troubles. If you know your sewing, making a wedding dress isn't too daunting. However, if you're unsure, consider leaving the job up to a seamstress. Even paying a professional is often much less expensive than buying the same wedding dress off the rack and having it altered. You'll pick your pattern the same way you'd pick a dress in a store. Keep your body type and shape in mind when you choose. No dress, no matter how beautifully patterned, will make an apple figure into an hourglass (at least, not without a lot of corsetry), and gowns designed for larger women will fail to flatter on thin ones. Also, remember how comfortable you are with particular styles. While strapless dresses are popular, many women don't feel comfortable showing that much skin, and it makes their wedding day awkward. However, there's a lot more choices available when you're using patterns. While you're limited to the styles that are "in" this year when you go to the boutique, using a pattern gives you access to every dress style imaginable – even ones from hundreds of years ago. Don't feel constrained when you go looking for wedding dress patterns. You don't just have to pick from gowns that are shown in white or are in the wedding section of the pattern catalog. Any dress that you like the look of can become a wedding dress. You don't even have to stick to white! If you're feeling bold, consider red (the traditional wedding color in China), or other colors. Brides who like color but want to be a little more traditional can choose a tint that appeals to their sense of taste without being too unusual. Make sure that you choose fabrics that go with the dress style – a gown designed for a diaphanous fabric won't work well in taffeta, and a gown that needs the support of a stiff fabric will do poorly in a soft one.
