Picking Your Second Wedding Dress

Before Queen Victoria's wedding in 1840, most brides wore a dress that was nice, in style, and any color at all.  However, afterwards, white began to symbolize purity, and the question of whether or not brides being married for the second time should be allowed to wear white.  Fortunately, today's world doesn't put such strictures on us, and white is considered to symbolize joy.  So, if you want to wear white for your second wedding, or any other color, you should feel free.

Other popular choices for second wedding dresses include pastels and ivory.  However, this doesn't stop women who want to appear in bold colors from wearing them to their ceremonies.  Personality and creativity are both big factors in the choice of a second wedding dress.  After all, it's your big day – why conform to what's expected.

Of course, your second wedding dress should match with the tone of your wedding.  It looks odd to wear a casual gown to a formal occasion, or one that's too dressy to a fun ceremony.  Consider what your ceremony and reception will be like when you pick your dress.

It helps to know which dresses are the most flattering to your figure when you shop for the right second wedding dress for you.  Bring along someone you trust – a friend, your mother, sibling, or daughter – to help you decide what dress looks best on you.  It doesn't matter whether you're shaped like an apple, a pear, or an hourglass, whether you're petite or tall.  What matters is getting the dress that flatters you best.  Any figure can look great in the right second wedding gown.  One caution, however – be sure that you wear the same underthings, shoes, and hosiery you'll be wearing for the wedding when you try on dresses.  A different bra or shoes can make your dress fit totally differently.

Most brides who are returning to the altar forgo wearing a blusher veil to cover the face with their second wedding dress.  However, some who are having formal weddings will wear a veil that covers the hair.  You can also substitute a tiara, hat, flowers, or ornament.  Now's the time to show off your hair, so have a professional stylist arrange it in a flattering and lovely style.  Be sure to schedule an advance appointment so that you'll be able to see what the style looks like before you wear it to the wedding.  You can even try the style out with your dress, if you like.

Second wedding dresses with trains are still used, but should match the formality and style of your wedding.  Remember that they can be difficult to manage, especially after the ceremony.  Detachable trains are popular for this reason, as are types that can be bustled up for ease of movement and for dancing.  Just a little planning will help you select the perfect dress for your second wedding.
